I’m not much of a magazine reader because most of the ones written for women are full of articles on how to lose weight and try to make yourself look like you’re 18 again. Frankly, I’m glad I’m not 18 and I have no intention of trying to make myself look like that again. I have other things I’d rather focus on right now than my waistline. A few months ago my sister in law started telling me about a magazine that she reads called Real Simple. She showed me one of them and I was actually impressed by what I found. There was a section on how to find multiple uses for normal items around your house. I read through them and thought they were all really clever and practical.
I have two wonderful dogs that I love very much. I’ve had them both since they were puppies and they are just like kids to me. They are indoor dogs and are very well trained and socialized. The only problem comes when I need to go out of town and can’t take them with me. We used to live near a lot of family that was willing to take care of them, but that’s not the case anymore. It’s hard to find someone willing to take care of two 115 pound dogs. We could have them go to dog kennels but they just don’t get that personal attention that we prefer. They also cost at least $20 per dog per night and that really adds up.
When my husband and I bought our first house we were so excited to decorate it, but we didn’t have very much money. Everything we had went into paying for the mortgage and other bills. We knew we would have to be very crafty and creative to give our house style with little or no money. We decided themes that we wanted for each room and came up with colors. The first big project we did was painting our bedroom red and spare room green. The project took longer than we thought because one room had about 10 layers of wallpaper and paint alternating all over it so we had to put a whole new layer of mudd on every wall.
For as long as I can remember I have always liked organization and order. Even though our house was fairly chaotic growing up, I kept my room fairly clean and uncluttered. I liked to know where everything was so I could find it when I needed. When I got married we lived in a cute little basement apartment and decorated our first home. It wasn’t much, but it was ours. I tried several different arrangements of the furniture until I found the one that seemed to make the room look biggest. We bought our first home and couldn’t wait to design all 1500 square feet of it.
I grew up in a home where we never re-decorated or attempted to have any sense of style whatsoever. My parents never painted a single room or wall for that matter. They were just so busy taking care of seven children, they only had enough time to cook, clean and drive us around to all our activities. When I was first married I tried to decorate our little basement apartment the best I could with hand me down furniture, but I couldn’t wait until we had our own house so we could really make it our own.
