online biddingAuctions have been around since the beginning of time.  They have been used to sell women for marriage, men for slavery, livestock for agriculture, rare pieces of art for display and machinery for farms and businesses.  People have even used auctions to sell their possessions to pay off debts.  Although auctions have always been fairly common throughout the world, the advent of the internet has increased their occurrences exponentially.  In 2008 the gross revenue of the auction industry for that year was approximately $268.4 billion.  This is, in part, greatly due to the internet.  Companies can put their items online and have thousands of people all over the world bid on them without having to move the merchandise until it’s sold.  Buyers can bid from the comfort of their own homes without having to pay travel expenses.  The arrangement is brilliant, but how can it benefit you?

womens spring fashionThe temperature outside  is in the mid fifties today, the tulips have popped out of the ground and I have a sudden urge to get my bike out from the garage and take it for a spin.  All of this signals to me that winter is just about over and spring is at my doorstep.  I’ve made it through the long and dark winter, managed to maintain my exercise levels throughout the holidays and now I want to get outside and feel the warm sun on my legs and arms again.   The only down side is that every spring I open my closet and am not very excited about what I have to wear.  In the winter I don’t really care what I wear as long as I’m warm, so I end up wearing a lot of jeans with hoodies or sweatshirts.  When the weather turns warm, for some reason I have a desire to look cute again, but the clothes I wore last summer don’t seem as cute as they once did.  I don’t have a ton of money to spend on new spring clothes, but what I do have, I want to make it stretch as far as possible.  In my search to find inexpensive spring clothes, I found a few sites that will work nicely.

My husband is a such a deal hunter.  He is constantly looking for the best deal on everything he buys and belongs to several websites that send out daily online deals.  Often times he’ll buy an item from one site and sell it on another site to turn a small profit.  He loves it so much, I have to limit how much he buys to prevent it from turning into an obsession.  I, on the other hand, like to find deals but don’t aim to resell items that I buy.  I am happy with finding a great price on something and calling it good.  Many of the great prices I find are on sites that have special deals of the day.  More and more sites are including daily deals to sell certain items and encourage shoppers to visit their site each day to see what the deal is.

Fun Family Game Night!

Fun Family Game Night!

It’s no secret the economy isn’t doing very well right now.  Most of us are trying to find ways to cut back and spend less money.  Some people are eating out less, others are trading in their gym memberships for running and hiking outside.  My husband and I have always been fairly frugal so we’re not making very many changes.  However, there is one area that we find hard to scale back on.  This is the area of entertainment.

Finding Money for College

Finding Money for College

Today I was reading the national headlines when something caught my eye.  It was a piece about how expensive college is these days.  Since my husband is in school right now, I read on to see if there was something I could learn to help us save money.  The article talked about soaring tuition, tighter budgets and record applications that all cause college to be much harder to go to these days.  I couldn’t believe it!  In New York State alone, the tuition was up 14% last year.  So, with all this not-so-good news, what are we to do?

FREE Money!

Intrigued by the title, are you?  I thought so.  The first time I saw it I wanted to know more too.  Are you wondering where it came from?  My husband and I recently did a very large lifestyle change.  We had been married for about 7 years, had our cute little house, two dogs and a daughter and my husband was set in his career path as a Realtor.  We thought we were living the life we wanted, but realized one day that we wanted something very different.  My husband decided he wanted to switch careers and go into something that he felt was more fulfilling.  Within a year we sold our house and most of our belongings, moved two states away to a small rental property, and my husband started school at a local community college in pre-nursing.  We only have one car, make most of our food from scratch, shop at thrift stores and are trying to live a more simple life.  I thought it would be hard, but to be completely honest, it’s very refreshing.

shopping smart 300x200 How To Shop Smart

Shopping Confusion

Many years ago, before I was born, when you needed to buy something you went to the store, bought what you needed and went home.  Occasionally you looked for sales or stores going out of business, but the buying process was simple.  Fast forward to today and being a consumer is more difficult and complicated than ever.  When you want to buy something you have the choice of doing it in person, over the phone, through a magazine or online.  If you buy something in person you get the satisfaction of having it right then, but you don’t always know if you got a good deal on it.  If you buy something online, you can usually search for a good price, but sometimes the item takes a while to get to you and you often have to pay shipping costs.  The question I want to pose to you is how do you know if you’re shopping the smartest way you can?

pirate1 177x300 Birthdays on a Budget?mermaid 265x300 Birthdays on a Budget? So my daughter is turning 4 soon and wanted to have a Mermaid party. The major complication with that is that most of her friends from school, the neighborhood and her cousins are all boys. How do you have a boy Mermaid Party?

After much thought and trial and error we came up with the idea of a mermaid & pirate party. In the context of Peter Pan and a few of the films they go hand in hand. With the main theme in mind, my next great challenge was creating fun activities and decorations that might be fitting for these kids… on a TIGHT BUDGET.
