Desktops and Laptops

hp desktop Desktops and LaptopsIt seems that most people prefer laptops these days to desktops. While laptops have the advantage of mobility over desktops, in my opinion this is one of the only advantages. If you’re thinking about buying a new computer, here are a few important things you should be considering when comparing the tradeoffs between laptops and desktops.

Like I said, the mobility of a laptop is great. I love my laptop and was required to have it for my Information Systems program. But laptops can have their fair share of problems. If you don’t need mobility, consider a desktop, if you do need mobility, get a laptop. All the components in a laptop are placed close together which can cause failure over longer periods of time. The processor gets hot and if not properly ventilated can cause the laptop to overheat. Taking a laptop apart to clean out dust and do other maintenance can be complicated. When my laptop needed to be cleaned out I decided to disassemble it, that is until I took a look at the disassembly manual and decided it was so complex. I opted to vacuum the dust out through the fan vent instead.

Cleaning out and replacing parts on a desktop is much more simple. Since everything is not crammed together in such a small casing, desktops stay cooler and can use more powerful processors that operate hotter. This means that new desktops are more powerful than new laptops. When a component on a desktop goes out of date, it is usually easy to replace making it possible to keep your computer up to date. Desktops are also generally cheaper than laptops.

Since there is more space in a desktop case, the components can also be bigger. More space means a hard drive can be physically bigger and have more storage space. It’s also possible to add multiple internal hard drives for more storage space or to perform better backups. There is room for more RAM and multiple drives.

Since a desktop is stationary, the internet connection is usually hard wired. While wireless is convenient for mobility, wired connections are better for security, speed, and reliability. As a matter of fact, most tech strong people use a wired connection with any computer anytime possible, even with laptops.

So to summarize, I don’t say that a laptop is better than a desk top or that a desktop is better than a laptop. They simply serve two different purposes and you should get what will best fulfill your needs. If you need mobility, get a laptop. If you don’t need mobility, you should think strongly about getting a Desktop. I personally recommend Hp or Dell desktops. Anytime I buy a computer I give myself a month time frame to find the best deal. I look at least once a week and when a good coupon appears, I go for the kill. If you’re in the market for a new computer, then check the HP and Dell stores frequently. New coupons are frequently added in both.
