bamboo Sending Not So Boring Flowers

Beautiful Bamboo

I think roses are as beautiful as the next person, but they are not my favorite type of flower.  There are so many flowers to choose from, it’s a shame to never try something new.  I told my husband when we were first married that I was fine with him never buying me flowers; I could easily use that money for something else.  Occasionally he’s surprised me with some and he always puts a lot of thought into it.  He usually chooses flowers that are in season or ones that look unique in some way.  He knows me well.

chocolate pearl Unique Jewelry Gifts

Chocolate Pearl

I’ve never been the type to wear a lot of jewelry, but I do like finding unique pieces that show creativity and beauty.  My wedding ring is very simple and classic and I’ve never found anyone else who has a ring like it.  There are so many more types to choose from these days it’s hard to keep up with them.  For instance, did you know they have chocolate pearls?  I saw them for the first time today.  I really like how they look more down to earth and simple.

crafts1 300x300 Cold Weather BoredumIt’s the middle of January, the holiday season is over and it’s months before spring time will start to appear.  You can’t go to the park, the zoo, the swimming pool and you’re getting tired of visiting the library and local fast food play area every day.  Your little kids are stir crazy and you need something to stimulate their brain and take up some time.  What do you do?

magazines New Years Special Treat

It is the start of a new year and you deserve to treat yourself to something special.  You could get yourself some flowers, but they won’t last very long.  You could get some new clothes, but you probably want to wait until you’ve lost those last few pounds you’ve sworn to do in your New Years resolution.  You could buy some new furniture, but with all the aftermath of Christmas, you want to de-clutter your house as much as possible.

One of my biggest passions is documenting my family history, for myself and for my children.  Because I

was the third of seven children, there are not very many pictures of me growing up and even less videos that show my gestures, what my voice sounded like and the phrases I liked to say.  I would love more than anything to see a glimpse as to what I was like as a child.  I know my parents did the best they could, but I am determined to make sure my children are able to see what they were like growing up.

I can just picture it now.  You’re waiting to go out for Valentine’s night and your man shows up with pre-boxed chocolates and a hallmark card.  You drive downtown and wait forever to get into a packed restaurant and enjoy your “romantic” meal with about 100 other people doing the exact same thing.  What’s wrong with this picture?  Maybe the fact that it took absolutely no creativity to plan the night.  Maybe you’re tired of doing the same thing every year, except you wear a different dress and go to a different restaurant.

valentines day1 Kids Valentines Day Books

Valentine’s Day is fun for adults and children alike.  I have vivid memories of writing out cards for each person in my school classroom, picking out specific ones for specific people.  They usually involved some cheesy saying and came with matching envelopes.  My favorite part was choosing the candy to accompany each card.  Everyone had their bag attached to their desk and we would all make our way around the room dropping off our deposits.

Timeless, Handmade Toys

Timeless, Handmade Toys

Christmas is getting closer and everyone is searching to find that perfect gifts for their family and friends. Some of the funnest gifts to shop for are those for little children.  Some people go for the cute ones, others like the ones that make noise.  Some people find the ones that remind them of their own childhood.  I tend to go for the ones that allow the child to be the most creative.  I find that more and more these days the toys are becoming all about the bells and whistles and less about how much the child can interact with them.  Most of them are cheaply made and fall apart in no time at all.  I am in favor of buying high quality, timeless toys that children can enjoy generation after generation.

Start of a New Year

What Will This New Year Bring?

Like most of you, when the new year rolls around, I try to reflect on my life that past year.  I try to recognize the good things that I’ve done and think about what I can do better.  Usually I find more things that I could be doing better or try to add things that I should do on top of what I’m already doing.  However, this year is different for me.  I want to focus more on what I AM doing right and try to do less of the things that aren’t really that important.

Happy New Years

Happy New Years

Growing up my parents had a very fun tradition with us kids for New Years Eve. At midnight we would grab all the pots, pans and large spoons we could find and stand at our front door banging them as loud as we could shouting, “Happy New Year!” We thought it was the funniest thing ever.  It wasn’t until we were older that we learned my parents would set the clocks ahead two hours that night so we were actually banging the pots and pans at 10pm. No wonder our neighbors always gave us such funny looks!
