I am a thirty year old mom of a toddler and am officially out of the “cool” phase of my life. I think I was cool at one point in time, but have officially put that title to rest in exchange for new titles like “mom”, “nurse”, “cook” and “portable jungle gym.” Yes, there are those moms that can still pass for high schoolers, but I am not that mom. I prefer no makeup, sweats and a t-shirt and my hair in a pony tail. I like to wear comfortable and low maintenance clothes so I can take my toddler on hikes, walks, bike rides, to the zoo and wherever we want to go each day.
Do you remember when you were young and you used to get one, maybe two toys for your birthday and Christmas? You played with that one toy day in and day out until it finally had to be thrown away. In those days toys were made of wood, cloth or metal, and were built to last for years. Most toys I find these days are cheaply made from plastic or paper and barely last more than a week. We’ve slowly turned into a community that accepts disposable toys without thinking of the consequences it may cause to the earth.
Valentine’s Day is fun for adults and children alike. I have vivid memories of writing out cards for each person in my school classroom, picking out specific ones for specific people. They usually involved some cheesy saying and came with matching envelopes. My favorite part was choosing the candy to accompany each card. Everyone had their bag attached to their desk and we would all make our way around the room dropping off our deposits.
Christmas is getting closer and everyone is searching to find that perfect gifts for their family and friends. Some of the funnest gifts to shop for are those for little children. Some people go for the cute ones, others like the ones that make noise. Some people find the ones that remind them of their own childhood. I tend to go for the ones that allow the child to be the most creative. I find that more and more these days the toys are becoming all about the bells and whistles and less about how much the child can interact with them. Most of them are cheaply made and fall apart in no time at all. I am in favor of buying high quality, timeless toys that children can enjoy generation after generation.
Like most people, I have always viewed Memorial Day as just another day off from school and the start of the warm weather vacation season. It’s the time of year when I pack away all my winters clothes and get out my fun Capri pants and flip flops to wear all summer. Something happened some years ago that made me view this day a little different.
