Emergency Kit

Emergency Kit

This time of year comes with a lot of great times with family and friends. Sadly this time of year tends to bring a lot of weather problems also. Anything from Blizzards, Snow Storms, Flooding, Hurricanes, Ice Storms, and Power Outages. NOW is the time to be prepared for the unexpected.

kinect familyWhen I was a kid, I played on an Atari for the first time and thought it was very cool and so high tech.  I remember playing Keystone Kapers, Frogger and Pitfall for hours on end.  I never did win any of them, but every time I hear one of their names, I get a smile on my face.  If you’ve never heard of them, you were probably born either before the 70’s and after the 80’s.  I am now married with a five year old daughter and this past Christmas we purchased  the Kinect game system for our family.  When I watch my daughter play soccer, go down a river on a raft or do the long jump on our high definition TV with high tech motion sensor tracking her every move, I am astonished at how things have changed.  I have to admit, I fought the idea of having video games in my home with children, but with the recent development of family friendly gaming, I think it can be a great addition to family activities.

christian apparelMy daughter just turned 5 and I have decided to teach her at home instead of sending her to public schools.  This decision is based on several factors, most of which have to do with what type of beliefs I want her to have.  I want her to have a broad view of the world and all that she can do to help those around her.  I want her to be confident about who she is and not worry about being popular or fitting in with a crowd.  I want her to trust her parents and really value her family relationships.  Because these are things that I desire for my daughter, I am constantly on the look out for anything that can help achieve these goals, like good books to read, clean movies to watch and modest clothing to wear.  Family Christian Stores has all of these things plus much more for me and my family.

canvas peopleOk, so the holidays are over, now what?  Did you do your due diligence by taking a bazillion pictures of your friends, family, crazy relatives or kids?  I didn’t take as many as I usually do, but I did get a few really great ones.  Now comes the question of what to do with them.  I send out a group of pics every month to family and friends that live around the country, but I rarely do anything else with them.  Wouldn’t it be nice if you could find a way to display them in an artistic way that doesn’t break the bank?

Holiday CookingWhen you think of holidays, what do you think of? I know some of the first words that come to my mind are: Family, Presents, Friends, Parties, Snow, and the best of all ….the FOOD. Between Thanksgiving, Christmas, and new Years there are plenty of amazing food you tend to only cook during the holidays.

If you are like me, I like to try a new recipe to share with loved ones especially around this time of year. A great resource site to refer to for ideas is Cooking.com. They have thousands of various recipes available at your finger tips with step by step directions. I liked how Cooking.com is very user friendly and you can  navigate through their site easily.

Great CostumesGrowing up we never had a lot of money and I was the youngest of seven kids.  As you can imagine Halloween time was a hectic time for my mom.  It normally ended the same way, rushing from store to store trying to find a costume last minute.  This time around I want to do it right.  I update coupons for this website, so with Halloween not far away I started looking around.  I was impressed at the cost and selection they offered at Costume Discounters. I was able to sort them by price, themes, age groups, and more.

Fun Family Game Night!

Fun Family Game Night!

It’s no secret the economy isn’t doing very well right now.  Most of us are trying to find ways to cut back and spend less money.  Some people are eating out less, others are trading in their gym memberships for running and hiking outside.  My husband and I have always been fairly frugal so we’re not making very many changes.  However, there is one area that we find hard to scale back on.  This is the area of entertainment.

Eating Well In Season

Eating Well In Season

Like many people, I try to eat well and exercise to stay healthy.  I plan my meals in advance and try to include fruits and vegetables with most meals.  I’m getting better at it, but I know I have a long way to go.  My husband and I have been trying to go more GREEN with things that we do and how we live our lives.  We live in a small home, drive only one car, recycle and try to cook most food from scratch.  However, there is one area that I need to be better at.  I need to buy more food locally from community farmers.  In just about any city in the country you can find local farmers that grow fruits and vegetables.  It does take more effort to find these farmers and it does cause you to go out of your normal routine of buying everything at the grocery store, but here are some great reasons why buying local is better all around.
