Save on Groceries Today!

Save on Groceries Today!

I absolutely hate buying groceries.  It’s one of things I dread most right now in my life.  Maybe it’s because I always have to take a 4 year old with me who insists on pushing the cart, which ends up running into everything in her path.  Or maybe it’s because I hate fighting crowds and I usually don’t have time to go shopping until 4pm which is when everyone under the sun seems to do their grocery shopping.  Or maybe it’s because I really dislike spending money on things that will just go through my body and come out the other end.  Whatever the reason is, anything that can make the task easier, or save me money is a good thing.

Tower of Cookies

Tower of Cookies

I love good chocolate and cheese as much as the next person.  In fact, chocolate and cheese are my two vices when it comes to food.  It all just tastes so good and I can’t help myself.  Chances are, I’m not the only one who feels that way and I’ll tell you why I think that.

Do you know how many amazing gourmet food companies there are?  I am lucky enough to see such companies first hand while updating coupons, and all I can say is wow!  I have seen everything from home made brownies, cakes and cookies, to fresh fruit and nuts, to meat and cheese platters, to chocolate covered strawberries being delivered right to your front door.  Ya, what a wonderful age we live in!

“If I told you that the same lifestyle choice could help you lose weight, reduce your risk of many long-term or chronic diseases, save you real money, and help stop global warming, I imagine you’d be intrigued.  If I also told you that this change, while not effortless, would be easier and more pleasant than any diet you’ve ever tried, would take less time and effort than your exercise routine, and would require no sacrifice, I would think you’d want to read more.  If you do, you’ll find an explanation of the links among diet, health, the environment in general, and climate change in particular, and you’ll see how you can make a difference.”

Food Preservation

Food Preservation

With the summer months fast approaching I’ve started to think about all the things I want to can, dehydrate, freeze and vacuum seal for my family to use all winter long.  Yes, I’ve become one of those women I used to make fun of that I thought acted too old fashioned.  It’s a funny thing how life changes your perspective on things.  I’ve already done one batch of strawberry jam and also dehydrated some strawberries.  I figure they might be good in muffins, oatmeal or trail mix.  Once berry season hits, I plan to pick as much as possible and make jam, dehydrate some and freeze the rest.  We just found a great chest freezer online and I can’t wait to fill it all up with good food.  I am new to canning, dehydrating and freezing, but I can see the great potential it has for providing good and natural food for my family throughout the year.

Eating Well In Season

Eating Well In Season

Like many people, I try to eat well and exercise to stay healthy.  I plan my meals in advance and try to include fruits and vegetables with most meals.  I’m getting better at it, but I know I have a long way to go.  My husband and I have been trying to go more GREEN with things that we do and how we live our lives.  We live in a small home, drive only one car, recycle and try to cook most food from scratch.  However, there is one area that I need to be better at.  I need to buy more food locally from community farmers.  In just about any city in the country you can find local farmers that grow fruits and vegetables.  It does take more effort to find these farmers and it does cause you to go out of your normal routine of buying everything at the grocery store, but here are some great reasons why buying local is better all around.

I have a very active and stubborn three year old that likes to give me a run for my money.  My husband works and goes to school full time so he’s not home very much.  That leaves a lot of hours in the day that I country woman1 A Magazine for Regular Womenhave alone with my daughter.  Most of the time we fill the days with activities, errands, play dates and other stuff, but some days we don’t have very much to do and I really need a break from her.  There is a store nearby that has an on site playland for kids where I can drop her off for up to an hour while I do my shopping.  I do a good deal of shopping there for this reason, but some days, I have to admit, I go there just for the free baby sitting.  I drop her off, go find a good magazine and sit in the furniture section reading until the hour is up.  I know it’s cheating, but I do give that store a lot of business so I figure it’s ok.

shopping smart 300x200 How To Shop Smart

Shopping Confusion

Many years ago, before I was born, when you needed to buy something you went to the store, bought what you needed and went home.  Occasionally you looked for sales or stores going out of business, but the buying process was simple.  Fast forward to today and being a consumer is more difficult and complicated than ever.  When you want to buy something you have the choice of doing it in person, over the phone, through a magazine or online.  If you buy something in person you get the satisfaction of having it right then, but you don’t always know if you got a good deal on it.  If you buy something online, you can usually search for a good price, but sometimes the item takes a while to get to you and you often have to pay shipping costs.  The question I want to pose to you is how do you know if you’re shopping the smartest way you can?

pizza 300x190 Food On A Budget

Homemade Pizza

As we all know, the economy is not doing so hot right now.  Jobs are scarce, the cost of living is high and many of us are struggling to make it each day.  We have tried to cut our expenses wherever possible, including my husband riding his bike to work and making whatever food I can from scratch.  Eating out really adds up so I’ve been trying to come up with meals that are inexpensive and healthy, but still taste good.  My favorite new meals are home made pizza and lentil soup.

Cake of Love

Cake of Love

I love to bake and cook, especially for special occasions.  I think making something from scratch for the ones you love lets them know how much you care, and it’s a good time to be creative or try something new.  Before you know it, Valentine’s Day will be here and it’s your chance to show some extra love for that special someone.  Why not surprise him or her with a home cooked meal made from the heart?  That’s what I did a few years back and it was so much fun!!

Cooking With Mom

Cooking With Mom

I have been thinking a lot lately about what goes into my body.  I can’t help but think that a lot of health problems people have can be cured by cutting out things from their diet, like soda and fast food.  There’s a big trend right now to have everything pre-packaged and pre-made so that it takes you less time to prepare it.  However, to get this convenience you sacrifice having additives and preservatives added into your food.  I for one don’t know how they make additives and preservatives but I’m fairly sure they’re man made and not from things you find in nature.
