Yesterday my husband and I were talking about camping trips we want to do this summer and how excited we were about them. Ever since we were first married we’ve camped, fished and hiked whenever we could. Some of the first things we ever bought together were camping gear supplies. Before we had kids we’d go camping every other weekend all summer long. We had all our gear packed in three large bags we could just throw in the car and go. Ah, those were the days. It’s not quite as easy when you have to pack clothes, food and gear for kids, but it’s definitely worth the effort. Ok, back on subject. So, we were talking about camping and how you don’t see as many people going camping with their families as you used to. Sure, people take trailers camping, or stay in yurts or cabins in the woods, but few people actually go camping the way it was originally intended: just you and nature.
A couple of months ago my husband and I were at a thrift store looking for a bike for our toddler (I buy most things at thrift stores because they’re usually in great shape and cost so much less) when we found a really cool book for one dollar. It’s called “Out and About With Kids: The Ultimate Family Guide for Fun and Learning.” Since we had just moved back to Portland we thought it would be a good way to find things to do as a family. The books contains the following chapters: Exploring Downtown, Kid Culture, Parks, Outdoor Active Play, Indoor Active Play, Farms, Spectator Sports, Excursions, Season By Season and Basics (restaurants, shopping, etc.). I looked through the book and ear tagged several that I wanted to try and have been able to check out a good number of them. The book came in even more handy when my in-laws came to visit Portland for the first time.
There you are sitting at home with dishes to do, floors to be swept and vacuumed, laundry to do, dinner to fix, children to bathe and bills to be paid. You spend your days completing all the necessary tasks without complaint and try to make sure all your kids and husband are happy and healthy. You don’t have time to exercise as much as you would like, you don’t ever go shopping by yourself and rarely have quiet time to read a good book. Does any of this sound familiar? I think most moms love what they do, but often feel like by the time they give everything to their husband, children, other family members and neighbors, they have nothing left for themselves. I am lucky enough to have a group of friends who understand the need to get away from their normal responsibilities once in a while to relax and refuel the tank that is nearly empty. Now, onto the incriminating pictures I have displayed for the world to see….
